Houston’s Gallery 200 Hosts Sacred Art Exhibit

Canvas Art of Joy Hilley on Display

HOUSTON 01/18/22—An opening reception for THIN PLACES, a juried solo exhibit featuring Joy Hilley’s art, is slated for Friday, February 11, 2022, from 6:30–8:30 pm at Gallery 200 in the heart of Houston’s art district. More than 35 original works of art, ranging in size from 4x4 to 60x72 inches, will be on display. This will be the largest exhibit of sacred art outside a religious institution or museum in Houston. Most of the pieces will be in her signature chalk paint with gold metal leaf on gallery-wrapped canvas. An octet of framed watercolors will round out the show. Joy will talk briefly about the pieces, what inspired her to create them, and her firm belief that beauty will save the world (a phrase first penned by Fyodor Dostoevsky).

The majority of Joy’s visual art is abstract, which she says “sparks the viewer’s own imagination, invites conversation, and embraces mystery.” Collectors often describe her work as “Rothko meets Turner” for the way in which she infuses color fields with light. The Thin Places collection explores sacred liminal spaces—places where the veil between heaven and earth seems thin.

Private and corporate collectors in the United States, Europe, and Australia have acquired Joy’s paintings for their homes, offices, and religious institutions. Her work has been displayed in numerous one-woman shows throughout the region. Her atelier is located on the campus of Sawyer Yards.

The THIN PLACES exhibit runs from February 12–April 30 at Gallery 200 in The Silos of Sawyer Yards (1502 Sawyer Street, Houston 77007). It is free and open to the public Monday–Saturday, from 9–5. A ramp entrance to the building is available from the front parking lot. Additional parking is available on both sides and at the rear of the building. Guests are encouraged to wear masks for the health and wellbeing of all.
